About SEL

OUR LABORATORY:
SEL is a UL Certificated Agency and the only one in the Bay Area and Northern California. As such, SEL has been evaluated for its ability to competently interface with UL on the administrative front; and provide engineering services to companies, such as preliminary product evaluation and testing to UL Standards. Many companies place the UL mark on their websites, which is actually against UL's policies, as it suggests some form of endorsement which does not exist. Please visit our File AG348 on UL's website to see our accreditation details.

OUR PEOPLE:
Lee Ould, III serves as our President. He joined the business full time after graduating  from Stanford University in 1992 with a Bachelor's degree in International Relations with the focus on the European Union, with engineering courses relating to product safety completed. He handles much of the test/measurement/laboratory equipment, unusual ITE products (new technologies), semiconductor equipment (SEMI), and laser safety.
Anna Ould is SEL's proud owner, Vice President and Treasurer, having been part of the company since its inception in 1972. Anna has a Masters Degree from Santa Clara University while her undergraduate work was done at SJSU.
Rick Buck joined us in September of 2001 with 20 years experience in product  compliance and certification. His experience includes working at UL for 3½ years, TUV Rheinland for 2 years, and 12 years consulting in product safety in the Bay Area. Rick has his·BA in Philosophy and MBA in Technology Management. He is a Founding Member and former Treasurer of the IEEE Product Safety Society; a Member of the IEEE EMC, Communications and Product Safety Societies; and is a Certified ISO Quality Auditor. Rick handles our EMC interfacing with CKC Laboratories, for those clients who are interested  in a single point of contact for compliance efforts.
Klaus Ehrlich joined us in December, 2006.  Klaus has extensive experience in regulatory compliance, having most recently been the manager of compliance engineering at Lucent Technologies for the past 6 years.  Prior to that, Klaus worked for 17 years in various positions in product compliance and engineering, including 13 years at TUV Rheinland as a Senior Engineer.  He was one of the first three engineers involved in establishing TUV Rheinland’s initial foothold in North America in the mid-1980s. In addition to product safety, Klaus can manage the NEBs compliance process, by offering tips for "designing in" compliance and testing at our partners’ facilities.
Carol Wahl typically handles the non-technical interfacing with our clients, particularly on the billing side of things. Carol has been an integral part of the SEL team for nine years.
Mary Costa recently joined SEL, having worked in Silicon Valley for several years, most recently at SBC Communications.  Mary will be working with the consultant team and provide non-technical support to the group.
Our Beginnings...
Our Founder, C. Lee Ould, Jr., received his B.S.M.E. from Santa Clara University in 1969, worked at Underwriters Laboratories until 1972, and was a consultant in this field until his death in 1998.
